You’re holding a classic deck of cards – and what’s more fun than trying out a few typical Dutch card games?
In the Netherlands, we’ve been playing card games with friends and family for generations. Pesten and Toepen are two true classics. Whether you’re in it for fun or glory, here are the rules!
Pesten – The ultimate Dutch family game!
Players: 2–6
Goal: Be the first to get rid of all your cards. But watch out – special cards can really mess things up!
Pesten is a light and fun game where friendships are put to the test. So think twice before blocking someone!

Toepen – Do you dare to bluff?

Objective of the Game
Be the first to get rid of all your cards!
Gameplay
• Each player gets 5 or 7 cards.
• The rest of the deck becomes the draw pile.
• One card is placed face-up as the starting card.
• The player who deals the cards and places the first card starts the game.
• Play goes clockwise—unless changed by a special card.
• Number of players: 2–6 (with one deck), or more with two decks.
Basic Rules
• You may only play a card that matches the previous card in number or suit—except for Jacks and Jokers.
• If you can’t play a valid card, draw one. If you can play it, you may do so immediately.
• If a 2 or Joker is played, you can play another 2 or Joker to pass the penalty on to the next player.
Example: 2 + 2 = draw 4 cards, Joker + Joker = draw 10 cards, etc.
• Got only one card left? Say “Pest!” If you forget and someone catches you, draw two penalty cards.
• The first player to get rid of all their cards wins the game.
Special Cards
Ace (A) – Change direction
Play an Ace to reverse the direction of play. If another Ace is played later, it reverses again.
2 – Pest card
The next player must draw two cards but can still play a card afterward.
7 – Sticky seven
Play a 7 and you’re allowed to immediately play another card.
8 – The 8 waits
The next player is skipped and loses their turn.
Jack (J) – Choose a suit
When you play a Jack, you get to choose which suit (♥ ♦ ♣ ♠) must be played next. The number doesn’t matter.
Joker – Super pest card
The next player must draw five cards. Then, they choose the next suit to be played.
Jokers can be played on any card.
Ready to Pest?
Now that you know the rules, it’s time to (playfully) pest your friends, family, or coworkers!
Grab a deck, give it a good shuffle—and don’t forget to shout “Pest!” when you’re down to one card.
Happy playing! 🃏
Setup
• Use a standard deck of cards and remove all cards below 7 (keep only 7 through Ace – 32 cards total).
• Suitable for 2 to 8 players.
• Shuffle the cards.
• Deal 4 cards per player. The remaining cards are not used.
• Agree beforehand how many penalty points knock a player out (e.g., 15 points).
How to Play
• The player to the left of the dealer starts by playing a card.
• Play continues clockwise:
• You must follow suit if possible (play the same suit as the first card).
• Don’t have that suit? You may play any card, but it can’t win the trick.
• The highest card of the original suit wins the trick.
• The winner of the trick leads the next one (and sets the new suit).•
• A total of 4 tricks are played.
• Only the fourth (last) trick determines the round winner.
Winning a Round & Penalty Points
• The player who wins the final trick wins the round and gets no penalty point.
• All other players receive 1 penalty point.
• Keep track of points with pen and paper or tokens.
Optional Rule: Dirty Laundry(Only for up to 5 players)
Before a round starts, a player may claim they have “dirty laundry” (e.g., three face cards and a 7, or four face cards) and ask for new cards:
• Other players may choose to check.
• If it’s not dirty laundry → the player receives 1 penalty point and must reveal their cards.
• If it is dirty laundry → the challenger gets 1 penalty point, and the player receives 4 new cards.
This rule can be used multiple times during the game.
End of the Game
The game continues until all players reach the maximum number of penalty points (e.g., 15), except one.
That player is crowned the Toep King 👑!
Have fun!
Toepen is fast, simple, and addictively fun – especially without bluffing or raising.
Perfect for a cozy game night with friends or family
